Shingrix is a vaccine designed to protect against shingles (herpes zoster), a painful rash caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. Shingles can lead to severe nerve pain, known as postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), and other complications, particularly in older adults. Shingrix is highly effective in preventing shingles and its associated complications.
How It Works
Shingrix is a recombinant, adjuvanted vaccine. It contains a non-live antigen, glycoprotein E, from the varicella-zoster virus, combined with an adjuvant system called AS01B, which enhances the body’s immune response. When administered, Shingrix stimulates the immune system to produce antibodies and activate T-cells against the virus, providing strong and long-lasting protection against shingles.
Administration
- Dosage: Shingrix is administered as a two-dose series.
- Schedule: The first dose is followed by a second dose 2 to 6 months later.
- Administration Method: Given as an intramuscular injection, usually in the upper arm (deltoid muscle).
