Tetraxim is a combination vaccine that offers protection against four serious diseases: diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), and poliomyelitis (polio). It is widely used in pediatric immunization programs, providing essential immunity to children with a single shot.It has Acellular Pertussis(painless/gentle) component, along with D and T and IPV components.-total 4 antigens.
How It Works
Tetraxim contains inactivated components of the bacteria and viruses that cause these diseases. When administered, it stimulates the immune system to develop antibodies, offering protection against future infections without causing the actual diseases.
Administration
- Primary Series: Typically administered as a series of three doses, starting at 6 weeks/2 months of age, with subsequent doses at 1-month intervals- 2,3,4 months of age. Make sure to give Hib and Hep b for the primary vaccination if Tetraxim is used.Since Separate HIb is not available in India, so it can be used only as the Second booster.
- Booster: First booster dose is usually given at 16-18 months of age( 1 yr after the primary vaccination during 2 nd years of life).Make sure to give Hib for the First Booster vaccination if Tetraxim is used.Since Separate HIb is not available in India, so it can not be sued as a First booster and can only be used as the Second booster.Second booster is given between 5-13 years of age, to ensure continued protection.
- Administration Site: Given as an intramuscular injection, usually in the upper thigh for infants or the upper arm for older children.
Side Effects
Common side effects may include:
- Pain or swelling at the injection site
- Mild fever
- Irritability
- Fatigue
Severe reactions are extremely rare.
Pregnancy and Lactation
- Pregnancy: Not for Adults.Not applicable, as it is intended for infants and young children.
- Lactation: Not for Adults.Safe for breastfeeding mothers to administer to their infants.
Minimum Age Group
- Minimum Age: Approved for use in infants starting at 6 weeks old.
- Maximum Age: 13 yrs
Contraindications
- Allergic Reactions: Not recommended for individuals with severe allergies to any component of the vaccine.
- Severe Illness: Vaccination should be postponed in cases of acute, severe febrile illness.
