Pentavac is a combination vaccine that provides protection against Five serious diseases: diphtheria, tetanus, w-pertussis (whooping cough), hepatitis B and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib). This vaccine is commonly used in pediatric immunization programs to ensure comprehensive protection with fewer injections.
How It Works
Hexasil contains inactivated components of the bacteria and viruses that cause these diseases, stimulating the immune system to develop immunity without causing the actual diseases.
Administration
- Primary Series: Given as a series of three injections starting at 6 weeks of age, with a minimum interval of 1 month(4 wk) between each dose.WHO recommends 6.10,14 wk as Primary Schedule.Interval can vary between 4-8 wk between primary vaccines.
- Booster: Administered at least 6 months after the last primary dose, typically between 12-15 months of age or 12-23 months of age.
- Alternate Schedules: If hepatitis B is given at birth, the primary schedule can be at 6, 10, and 14 weeks, with boosters following the same schedule.
- Administered intramuscularly, usually in the upper thigh for infants (alternating thighs).
- Since IPV is compulsory at 6,10,14 wks, 18 months & 4 yrs, and separate IPV injection is not available in India, so Pentavac should not be given for Primary Vaccination and Boosters (both 18 months and 4 yrs)
